How to Transfer Data For XP to Windows 7, 8, or 8.1

In Windows XP


1. If you have not already, you will need to download and install the free Laplink PCmover Express at the link below on your Windows XP computer.

2. Run Laplink PCmover Express, and click on Next.



3. Click on PC to PC Transfer, and click on Next.


4. Click on Windows XP, and click on Next.


5. Click on WiFi or Wired Network, and click on Next.


6. Your Windows XP PC will now be analyzed.


7. When it's finished analyzing, go to step 8 in SECTION TWO below to continue on the Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 computer.



8. If you have not already, you will need to download and install the free Laplink PCmover Express at the link below on your Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 computer.

9. Run Laplink PCmover Express.

10. If prompted by UAC, then click/tap on Yes.

11. Click/tap on Next.

12. Click/tap on PC to PC Transfer, and click/tap on Next.

13. Click/tap on Windows 7 / Windows 8, and click/tap on Next.


14. If prompted to register the free PCmover Express, enter your name and email address, and click/tap on Next


15. Click/tap on WiFi or Wired Network, and click/tap on Next.


16. Make sure that the computer name (ex: Brink-XP) of your Windows XP PC is listed, and click/tap on Next.



17. Your Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 PC will now be analyzed.


18. Do step 19 or 20 below for standard or advanced.


19. To Do a Standard Transfer

This step is to transfer using default settings. This will transfer the files, settings, and user profiles from your old Windows XP computer to this current user account in Windows 7, 8, or 8.1.
A) Click/tap on Standard, click/tap on Next, and go to step 21 below.

20. To Do an Advanced Transfer

This step will allow you to customize the user account selections, drive selections, file filters, and folder filters to what and how you want to transfer from Windows XP to Windows 7, 8, or 8.1.
A) Click/tap on Advanced, and click/tap on Next.

B) Select an item you wish to customize. Once finished with an item, you will return to this screen.

User Account Selections:
You may review and edit the settings for how user accounts will be transferred.

The settings and associated files for the users on your old PC will be transferred to the user accounts on your new PC as shown in the list. If you have already established settings for the users on your new PC prior to the transfer, these settings will remain the same and will not be overwritten by the transfer. The user names and passwords for the users on the new PC will also remain the same.

To transfer all of the users to the new PC as listed, click Done.

To modify how a user is transferred to the new PC, select the user in the list and click Edit User. In the dialog box that appears, you may choose to transfer to a different user on the new PC, or you may create a new user on the new PC. You may also choose to not transfer the user at all. Click OK when Finished, and then click Done.

Drive Selections:
If the old computer has multiple drives, all drives will transfer by default. If desired, you may review and edits settings for how drives will be transferred.

If the old PC contains more disk drives than the new PC, PCmover will create a folder for each drive that does not exist on the new PC.

To transfer all of the drives to the new PC as listed, click Done.

To modify how a drive is transferred to the new PC, select the drive and click Edit Drive. In the dialog box that appears, you may modify the drive and/or default folder to which the drive from the old PC is transferred. Make these changes in the “Transfer to New Directory” text field. You may also choose to not transfer the drive from the old PC. Click OK when finished, and then click Done.

File Filters:
You may choose to exclude certain File types from the transfer. Filter is by file extension.

PCmover allows you to list file types to exclude from the transfer.

Some file types are already set up for you in this screen, such as temporary files (.tmp). These files are generally small, but if you have a large number of them, they can take up quite a bit of hard drive space. To exclude any of these file types, select the check box(es).

To exclude other file types not shown on this screen, click Add and type the ?le type extension(s) of the File(s) you wish to exclude. For instance, if you want to exclude all ?les in .jpg format, this is where you list “*.jpg”. Click OK when Finished listing ?le types.

Click Done when Finished.

Folder Filters:
You may choose to exclude certain folders from the transfer.

PCmover allows you to deselect and exclude speci?c folders from the transfer. If, for instance, you do not want to transfer any of the ?les in the Pictures or Music folders, you can deselect those folders in this screen, and they will not transfer to the new PC. You cannot exclude speci?c ?les, but you can exclude specific folders.

All folders that remain selected in this screen will transfer to the new PC.

Click Done when you have finished deselecting folders.



C) When finished, click/tap on Next, and go to step 21 below. (see screenshot above)21. If prompted, uncheck any recommended options, select (dot) Don't install any software on my new PC to prevent them from being included in the transfer, and click/tap on Next.


22. When you are ready to transfer from XP, click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

This window presents a summary of ?les, settings, and total data that will be transferred. Depending on the speed of your connection, hardware con?guration, and other factors, your transfer time may vary.


23. You will now notice the transfer in progress on both the XP computer and the Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 PC.



24. When the transfer is done, check the Restart Computer Automatically box, and click/tap on Finish.

 Warning
Be sure to save and close all opened items first.

25. Click/tap on Yes to confirm.


26. When finished, go to step 27 in SECTION THREE below to continue on the Windows XP computer.[/indent]

27. Uncheck any options, and click/tap on Next.


28. Click/tap on Finish.
